Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Pascal McCarthy, CEO of Parados Cerebral Solutions Inc., located in Fredericton, NB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Parados is on a mission to make comprehensive physical evaluations more accessible, accurate, efficient, and objective. We work with Major League and Olympic level trainers & athletes to solve their challenges surrounding evaluations by using next-generation technologies such as sensor-less motion tracking computer vision AI to remotely quantify key biometrics. Our flagship SaaS streamlines evaluations and enables root-cause analysis rather than a traditional symptomatic, reactive approach. We also offer a real-time service that creates digital twins of individuals performing movements to easily measure and compare biomechanics over time as well as between people. Parados is currently working on predicting mental states on top of physical limitations using neuromechanics principles to allow for truly comprehensive evaluations. You can demo the tech yourself through your own browser here: https://storage.googleapis.com/tfjs-models/demos/pose-detection/index.html?model=movenet.

Tell us about yourself

I love learning, and I love teaching. In order to start this business, I had to learn a ton of different things: accounting, taxes, marketing, sales, management, and fundraising, on top of the already complicated computer vision machine learning application we have developed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Raising $500 000 and building an AI tech business as a solo founder straight out of university with no connections, previous experience, etc. I encountered a lot of doubt and pessimism, which only fueled me more for some reason. I think it's because I love a challenge.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The high highs and the low lows. It can be mentally draining and financially stressful but extremely rewarding because of the opportunities to learn and grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on one step at a time, but don't miss the forest for the trees.
  2. Be willing to be the least knowledgeable in the room and listen.
  3. Pick something you can obsess over, but be ready to change your opinions and ideas.
