What's your business, and who are your customers?

paperreka is a boutique branding studio that helps female passionpreneurs to holistically unfold their brand stories with compelling visuals to sound/look/feel as good as the value of their products and services.

Tell us about yourself

I made a flier in college for a play, and I fell in love with conceptual design work. I didn't know at the time that branding encompassed everything I would love about graphic design: thinking, strategy, visuals, tactile elements like papers, colors, organization of information, and presentation. I love a sexy ass logo, but give me the juicy details of how you got there, too! My core values are beauty and freedom. Anything beautiful—objects, poetry, good humans, pretty storefronts, or freeing—like a balmy evening motorcycle ride motivates me to keep going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The awards are nice, and seeing your work in the wild is cool,—but having clients return to you for work or get emotional about their brand when they see it for the first time makes it all worthwhile.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying disciplined to know when to push and when to let it go.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your why. Why do you get up in the morning? What makes you want to do it when it gets hard? Why this, why now?
  2. Establish your values (no more than 3). EVERYTHING you do has to filter through this.
  3. Get quiet enough so you can listen to your gut. If it's not a hell yes, it's a no.
