Creating a New Performance Driven Leader - Pamela Mumm

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Pamela Mumm, mentality maestro, and enterprise growth specialist, based in Dubuque, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of elevating people. As I continue to work with leaders, it is obvious that people have been told repeatedly about their mistakes, imperfections, and missteps. They are beaten down, stressed out, and overwhelmed. In my line of work, those are moments to be observed and celebrated because they are the landscape informing our next decisions. It is in those situations we learn to understand ourselves and shed the useless nonsense holding us back.

Tell us about yourself

After spending 20 years as a Choral Director, exceeding every expectation and overcoming every barrier put in front of us, I decided it was time to influence a wider audience. Being an entrepreneur is in my blood. I started my first business when I was 16 years old, so starting another business in 2011 seemed familiar and exciting. Every day, I see people committed to creating peace, joy, and happiness in their lives for themselves and the people they love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've repeatedly heard that most businesses fail within the first three years, and here I am, 11 years later, working with hundreds of people who want to make a difference in the world. It is my greatest honor to witness people overcoming obstacles and exceeding their own expectations at a pace that even they find astonishing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is the consistent and steep learning curve that allowed me to get the business off the ground and continue to grow even today. It was important that I gave myself grace as I was learning new skills and leaned into failing fast so I could learn effective ways to take the business where I wanted it to go.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pay attention to your intuition. If you know that an idea has been given to you that serves humanity, it is up to you to bring that idea into the world.
  2. Don't be discouraged when people close to you don't fully understand what you are trying to accomplish. You don't need them to understand in order to get started.
  3. Talk about your business, and when you meet people who "get it," be sure to remain connected with them. The future of your business only exists in words, so keep speaking life into what you are creating.
