What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've operated Pamela Harris Design for more than twenty years. My goal is to create good work that communicates the client's message, both online and in print. In recent years my focus has shifted to developing my own design brand, Desynamo Graphics. This work appears on art prints, home decor items, tech accessories, apparel, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I spent many years doing graphic design at ad agencies, print shops, and in-house corporate marketing departments. At some point, after-hours freelancing started to generate more interest and income than going to my 'day job.' Now, after handling clients' design and marketing needs for more than two decades, I'm working to develop personal creative projects that have taken a backseat to client work. There's a huge backlog of ideas just waiting for me in dozens of sketchbooks that I've filled over the years.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Supporting myself well by doing work I love and making a contribution to my community with well-designed visual communications.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Focusing on what needs to be done right now and letting everything else wait (or delegating items to others). There's always an endless list of tasks requiring my time and attention, but there is only one of me, and only so many hours in a day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start.
  2. Figure things out as they come up.
  3. Keep going. (This is naive and idealistic, but the point is there are always legitimate reasons for not starting a business, so at some point, if you can't talk yourself out of it, just take the plunge! :-)
