For All Ages and Experience Levels - Page Music Lessons

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elliot Page, President of Page Music Lessons, Inc., located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Page Music Lessons is the premiere private music school in Boston’s Back Bay, serving both adult students and children. Our mission statement is simple: we are here to help people improve their music playing, enjoy their music to the fullest, and achieve their music goals. We focus on private music instruction with our top-tier instructors, supplemented with ongoing performance opportunities and events.

Page Music Lessons is a little different from your stereotypical lesson studio in that we enroll up to 75% of adult students. While we won a Best of Boston award from Boston Magazine for “Best Music Lessons, Kids,” our Newbury Street location is a haven for adult students looking to immerse themselves in their favorite music. We help students of all ability levels, including many beginners, and we work with all genres of music. We have a diverse community with students and teachers from all over the world. We strive to foster a comfortable vibe at the school for our many adult students as well as our younger students.

Tell us about yourself

As the business owner, I oversee all of the operations, and I still keep a hand in teaching and running our Jam Night program, where adult students learn to play blues, rock, and jazz standards in a band setting. I write and perform original music with my project, The Forest Effect, handling the guitar and lead vocals. Music motivates me every day, and sharing my love of music through teaching and operating a successful school is a natural fit for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating and sustaining a business that allows me the flexibility I desire within my chosen field of expertise. I highly value the “time wealth” I can spend with my family and on artistic pursuits. A recent big accomplishment was hosting our Faculty Concert at Berklee College of Music, which was a great community event, and I plan to do more!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Keeping the proverbial wheels turning. While that next big idea seems super exciting, you have to keep the day-to-day stuff happening, and it’s often time-consuming.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Especially early on, seek advice from some industry leaders. Join a consulting group, attend seminars, etc.
  2. Create and continually improve your business systems. You’ll need repeatable actions that can expand or contract as needed.
  3. Offering a consistent service/product is key, but at the same time - be open to change.
