Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in public relations services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Misetic, Founder of Overtime PR, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I’m a publicist who helps individuals, companies, and groups in the sports and entertainment communities build and maximize their image potential among the general public and media. Whether a nostalgic look back, an entrepreneurial profile, a new project or product launch, or anything in between, my job is to shape, frame, and pitch stories that resonate, create coverage, and increase visibility.
Tell us about yourself
My passion for public relations was actually discovered by my cousin while we both attended Loyola University-Chicago. She approached me at a time when my priorities were a bit askew, and I had declared a Political Science major with the vague intention of becoming a lawyer. She saw the publicist in me before I did.
Over the past 25-plus years, I’ve prided myself on establishing and maintaining trusting relationships with countless members of the media. However, it wasn’t until the encouragement of a few professional athletes with whom I’d already worked that I decided to launch my own business focused on sports and entertainment. Today, my clients are getting the publicity services they might expect from a larger agency but with a more personal approach.
As for what motivates me each day… Nothing motivates me more than seeing my clients get the attention and recognition they deserve.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Taking the chance on myself to start my own business and do something I love, and the relationships that I’ve built with my clients.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Dealing with the unknowns. Despite your best intentions and superior planning prior to opening a business, every day will bring new challenges and obstacles. Business is never predictable, no matter how prepared you are.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on something you’re passionate about. When you’re passionate about something, nothing that has to do with it will ever become boring or tiring.
- Ask for help. Seeking guidance – from other business owners, mentors, peers, family, friends, and even your clients – is simply another way of taking charge of your business. Rather than being thought of as a weakness, reaching out can help your chances for success.
- Maintain a healthy work-life balance. Make sure you aren’t spending 100% of your nonsleeping time either at work or thinking about work. Take time to do things you enjoy, whether that’s traveling, exercising, cultivating a hobby, or spending time with friends and family.
