Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Lexi Meleski, Founder of Our Wellness Community, located in Dallas, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We provide access to affordable holistic healthcare services, primarily chiropractic, and previously doula services through just me, and now we also offer massage, lymphatic enhancement therapy, physical therapy, pelvic floor therapy, IVs and detox foot baths, counseling, lashes, womb care and vaginal steams, and pediatric services. Our customers are primarily single-income and working families, seeking our services because they desire a different way of life that is actually affordable to be consistent in.
Tell us about yourself
Originally from Wisconsin, the oldest of 4 from two very hard-working parents, I wanted to be an obstetrician. My life path changed, and becoming a chiropractor was exactly what was supposed to happen. I wanted to share this offering with people like my parents - hard-working, living paycheck to paycheck, having kids, and wanting a better life. And so, Our Birthing Home was born. Over years of transition, five years practicing out of my own home, a nonprofit organization formation, and moving into an LLC and a 6,000-square-foot commercial space, what inspires me each day to keep going and do what I do are the people I serve. Each person is like a part of my family, and I am so excited to meet and serve and hear about their lives and witness their healing journey.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is providing a space where all people feel welcomed like they’re walking into our home. After practicing out of my home for five years, I wanted our next space to still have that feel but be bigger, and not my house 😏, and when a new person walks in and says they feel at home, that is music to my ears.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is the financial hardships. I haven’t raised my prices on practice members or providers, but there always seems to be more money owed than what’s coming in. Is it all still worth it? Of course!!! Because a lot of our families wouldn’t ever consider receiving chiropractic care or other services consistently, weekly, for the rest of their lives, without what we’ve been able to offer all these years.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- What’s your “why” behind it? If your “why” is big enough, the “how” will work itself out.
- If possible, get a partner or investor.
- It all takes time (and showing up daily). Patience obtains all things.
