Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Isaiah Redfern, owner of Ottawa Performance Care, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Ottawa Performance Care (OPC) is a clinical neuroscience-based clinic designed to treat concussions and other injuries in an industry-leading time frame. I primarily treat concussions, dizziness, and migraines, whereas the rest of the OPC team has every base covered. From manual therapists using medical/ electro-acupuncture to our holistic health nurse working on all things gut health/ digestion, hormones, or environmental toxins, or our registered psychotherapist is helping her clients navigate the forever changing waters of life. OPC offers a holistic approach to healthcare, with a focus on fixing the problem rather than giving our patients a temporary band-aid.
Tell us about yourself
I was in the United States studying clinical neuroscience and chiropractic when I received a neck adjustment that gave me a fluent speech for roughly 8 hours. (I have had a stutter my entire life, so this was quite the experience for me).
From this moment, I had two questions 1) what just happened neurologically to improve my speech? 2) how can I bring this type of treatment to my future patients?
After studying, studying, and more studying, I finally understood what happened in my experience, but suddenly I didn't care enough to change my stutter. I guess now that I knew I could change it, I simply accepted it. My focus changed, and all I cared about was how I could treat the patient in front of me as fast and permanent as possible.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To be honest, this is tricky. I don't believe I've accomplished anything by myself. My faith as a Christian is incredibly important to me. I believe that I am where I am supposed to be, and I have treated the people I'm supposed to treat. I don't believe that any of my success is mine alone.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Enjoying your time outside of work. As a business owner/entrepreneur, your mind is always going a mile a minute trying to figure out the next step or what can be improved. Learning how to leave work at work is an incredibly hard but valuable skill.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be prepared to feel like starting a business was a mistake.
- Don't compare yourself to others.
- Remember that every day is a new shot at your dream.
