Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Oswaldo Coello, Owner of Mr. C's Homeschool Music Academy LLC., located in Jonesboro, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are an online music academy dedicated to providing general music courses for homeschooling parents and children, training and workshops for music teachers, musical storytelling creations for authors, and leadership seminars for sales teams.
Tell us about yourself
I began Mr. C's Homeschool Music Academy after I decided to write a book on singing techniques. I received quite a bit of feedback from family and friends, and that is when I decided to go further and build a business by teaching children music outside of teaching for someone else's school. My daily motivation is my homeschooling children and wife, who experienced hardship when it came to finding the right places for our children to attend specials like music. The thought of giving opportunities to someone who wants to express themselves musically and acquire musical skills while developing confidence through music is also what continues to motivate me to share the knowledge and opportunity that was given to me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is waking up every day and knowing that I can successfully run my own business without giving up on this dream.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Getting my message out there to the masses. It's very difficult to convince others who don't know your background that you know what you are doing, especially when it comes to teaching their most prized possessions. Convincing parents, business owners, and inquiring students that you will provide the service you say you can provide can be daunting in the beginning because they just don't have enough proof that you are who you say you are and that you can deliver.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure you put aside at least $5000 per month for marketing purposes if you want to make things easier when you first start getting the word out about your business.
- Don't take rejection too harshly. Continue to be determined and know that what you provide has value. You just have to find an appealing way to present it to your specific audience.
- Watch out for charlatans that say they will help you grow your business but end up taking your money, and your business remains the same
sometimes it is not the person you hired; it may be your own fault, so we can't always blame them, however, make sure the ones you trust can be trusted.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am grateful that my business is all about music because of its relation to academics and confidence. I can apply musical concepts to any given situation that may require extra help and guidance in life, and music will always be the antidote needed to keep anyone striving for excellence.
