Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Osiris Rain, Owner of Osiris Rain Studios, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Osiris Rain Studios specializes in public and corporate murals, as well as brand development and content creation. My clients range from municipal entities such as Jersey City Arts and Charlotte Regional Visitors Association to developers such as Crescent Communities and international brands and corporations such as Under Armour, Sheetz, Stella Artois, and Lending Tree.
Tell us about yourself
I started Osiris Rain Studios around 20 years ago but have only broken into the mural market about 6 years ago when my core clients from the film and television industry moved their primary productions to Georgia. I was forced to reevaluate my entire business strategy to not be reliant on one industry. Now I find joy each day in being able to create beautiful visual experiences for the clients and communities that I serve.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm very proud that I've been able to employ and train up-and-coming artists in this demanding and cutthroat business so that when they leave my employment, they are able to establish strong and successful careers of their own.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the primary challenges for me has been constantly innovating in response to my competition and market trends. You always need to be one step ahead of your competitors.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stick to your core. It's dangerous to diversify your service too much to the detriment of diluting the value and quality of your core service or product.
- Love what you do. If your job doesn't bring you joy, you will inevitably fail, as starting a small business is far more difficult than most endeavors that you will ever undertake in your life.
- Do your research into your market and have a solid business plan. The top reasons for small business failures are money running out, being in the wrong market, a lack of research, bad partnerships, ineffective marketing, and not being an expert in the industry.
