Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amie Glasgow, owner of Oscar Winning Behavior, located in Randallstown, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Oscar Winning Behavior is all about cat and dog behavior that wins rewards! I'm a cat and dog behavior consultant specializing in aggression and anxiety, but my customers are FAMILIES. I want everyone in the family - not just the animals - to feel safe and happy together, and I work hard to provide training plans that are simple enough to remember, quick enough to fit into your life, and effective enough to make a difference.
Tell us about yourself
Animals have been important to me my entire life and have been integral in helping me through some dark times. I want other people to be able to have the same relationships with pets and to be able to work through challenges and come out the other side closer together.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Surviving the pandemic as a small business was no joke. I work in a very -shall we say- hands-on field, and the thought that we wouldn't be able to see people in person was incredibly intimidating. Fortunately, I've been working with Separation Anxiety via zoom for years before covid, so I was more comfortable with that option than many, but convincing owners that I really don't need to see their dog bark to understand that the dog barks is tricky. Fortunately, the proof is in the pudding, and online training really can be effective!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Behind the scenes. I got into this because I love animal behavior and helping people understand it. I didn't get into it because I'm great with social media or accounting. But I still have to do all of that to function!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find hobbies that aren't related to that business.
- Set time-off boundaries (and STICK TO THEM).
- Be the kind of employer you always wished you'd had
be generous, fair, and compassionate to your employees.
