Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tara Black, owner, and CEO of Origin Gluten-Free Bakery Ltd., located in Victoria, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Origin Gluten-Free Bakery Ltd. started in 2009 as a market stall in Bastion Square. Since then, the company has grown and operates an online store, wholesale distribution, a retail bakery, and a licensed cafe. Our customers are made up of individuals with limitations to their diets, such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease, IBS, and other autoimmune-related disorders. Also, a good percentage of our customers are gluten-free by choice.
Tell us about yourself
I initially started this business with a close friend and incredible family support. I now am the sole owner, and the family dynamic has changed too, but it is still incredibly supportive. The initial reasons for this business are still the foundation, to create food that serves people with limited options in a healthy and tasty way. I want someone to know that they are safely cared for when they eat our food and that their money was well spent. My motivation comes from my willingness to be of service to others, for those that I work with, our customers, and our community.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The last two years have been incredibly challenging. I think keeping the doors open and employing people consistently are the two biggest accomplishments at this time.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Managing the expectations of your customers and your staff simultaneously.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Think of the worst-case scenarios and create a business plan that mitigates the risks of those scenarios. Be thankful and grateful if you never have to use that business plan. Remember that each person you are in contact with is someone you can help make their lives better, whether it is an employee, a customer, a colleague, or a stranger. Our businesses exist because of the community that we serve. Engage with that community so that they will support you when circumstances are challenging.
