Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Himanshu Jain, Director of Organic Kashmir Pvt. Ltd, located in Srinagar, Kashmir, India.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a farmer-centric unit that provides assistance and technology to local farmers to produce high-grade organic spices and honey. We provide a complete buy guarantee to them so they can concentrate on production and quality.
Our main customers are people who have realized that health and body is the most treasured thing; you can enjoy the world and family only if you are fit, and to be healthy, you need to eat good quality organic food.
Tell us about yourself
We are based in Kashmir with a head office in New Delhi, India. We mainly started as a small project to enable farmers in Kashmir to earn better and educate them about modern cultivation combined with traditional practices. Slowly it catched up, and people started joining in. Customers loved the products, so it got converted into a business on its own. At the core, we still are just trying to make farmers' lives better.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a business owner, I feel we are able to bring back the trust of buying genuine organic Kashmir products in our customers. When we started, it was difficult to convince them that we were not running scams like others in the market, so we actually invited people to our forest lands and factory. Provided them with third-party lab reports and gained that trust.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The challenge is to keep ethics and maintain profitability. We constantly get offers to buy at lesser prices, cheapen the quality, and the threat of losing work to the competition, which is cheating customers. But we maintain our standards and avoid wrongdoing. We have worked so hard to gain the trust of our customers that it is just not doable to cheat them in any form.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Share the profit with farmers; they are the backbone.
- Don't be impatient with the market; it will test your nerves and force you to compromise.
- Build relations over sales. It leads to a lot greater rewards in the future.
