Bringing You the Cutting Edge Body You Desire - Organic Edge

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shannon Conklin, Founder of Organic Edge, located in Water Mill, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Organic Edge is a wellness center in the Hamptons, NY. We serve the year-round and seasonal clientele, bringing them the body they desire naturally, their organic Edge.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for wellness comes from a place of survival. From chronic illness as a child to losing my father to colon cancer at 49 years old, I have committed myself to help people heal and purify their bodies in the most natural and cutting-edge ways.

The business part is secondary if you genuinely have a passion for what you do and wake up every day trying to bring as much value as possible. Everything I do is reverse-engineered through the lens of my clients and what they need, which is easy to figure out because it's what I need to stay optimally healthy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My grand opening date for Organic Edge was March 15th, 2020, after an almost year-long construction delay. That was the day New York shut down because of Covid. After all, that, opening a service-based business during a pandemic and surviving is my biggest accomplishment and something I wear as a badge of honor.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a small business owner, in particular, you are everything from the janitor to the CEO, and in doing all of those jobs, you realize how important it is. You also learn how prioritizing your time and giving yourself a break is essential. There will always be more time, and things will never be constantly perfect.

Deciding what tasks are the most important helps keep those things in high regard. Everything is on your shoulders, and in the end, it is your fault or your victory, so keeping your pulse on everything is critical. You do the most work, and everyone gets paid before you. All of that being said, it's all worth it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be very clear about your why. Ensure this is a want from within and not for external validation. If it is a true passion, it will be more challenging than you think and rewarding than you can imagine.
  2. Have a plan but avoid getting stuck in the planning stage. Take consistent action. Stagnation because of decision paralysis is a waste of time and energy. Make decisions fast and pivot if they were the wrong move. Usually, you can do something wrong and correct it quicker than you can sit and ponder with indecision. You've also then learned something from the mistake.
  3. Go with your gut. I had a lot of healthy-meaning family and friends who thought I was making mistakes when building Organic Edge. They were telling me because I was asking and because I value opinions. However, I am confident enough that I am only listening to those opinions to see if it changes my mind or spark a new thought, not because it will cause me to doubt myself. Ultimately, I do what I know to be actually inside of myself. Once again, in the end, it's all on me.
