Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richard Rickey, CEO of Orenda Education, located in Georgetown, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We operate K-12 public charter schools in Central Texas. Our customers are parents and their children who chose our unique education products.
Tell us about yourself
I was a healthcare executive most of my career, but circumstances and opportunities came along that led me to start a charter school company to meet a unique education niche I had identified. I'm fulfilled when I see students thriving and parents that are grateful for school choice.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Operating a highly academically rated K-12 campus in the Austin, Texas area and having an S&P bond rating that puts us at the top of charter school rankings.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Recruiting and keeping quality teachers.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, you must get your board governance right. All board members must be aligned with the company's vision, values, and strategic plan. Second, be realistic in your projections. Third, know what your story is and constantly tell it.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Our American education system needs more choices for parents and teachers so they can enter into voluntary associations, thereby allowing the parent to find an education option that works best for their children and aligns with their family values. The taxed dollar needs to follow the child.
