Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Philip Kish, owner of Optimal Movement, located in Rochester, MN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Optimal Movement is a boutique-style wellness clinic located in Rochester, Minnesota. We are a one-stop-shop that has a little bit of everything. Including, but not limited to, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, physical therapy, IV therapy, blood labs, and genetic analysis in a one-of-a-kind setting. We even have a little sales area with hand-crafted local jewelry and small-batch herbs, salves, and liniments that will ease your pain or help you sleep.
Tell us about yourself
In my early 20s, I got lost in the medical system with chronic pain. They had no answers, and I was left a meaningless number in the health care system. I was able to regain my health and wellness through all of the services that we currently offer! However, I had to go to multiple locations to get everything done, and the communication between practitioners was a nightmare. That was when I had the idea to create a space that offered all the healing magic under one roof! My driving purpose is to positively impact as many people as I can every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I feel extremely fortunate to have such an amazing staff and a community that supports our cause. To have support from the community means that we are making an impact in their lives; that is our biggest success. Optimal Movement is nothing without each practitioner and the community that supports us.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Turning it off. You are always expected to be on when you own a business, even when you're not. It can be very challenging not to worry about employees, patients, and oddly enough, even success. We are at a point where we have a very solid following which should be comforting. Instead, I worry about the other shoe dropping, and I have learned that it always does in some way, shape, or form. You just have to recalibrate and use each obstacle as an opportunity to grow.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If you are comfortable, it's too late.
- Be hard on yourself, don't let up, but take care of yourself.
- Treat people as individuals, not numbers, not dollar signs, know their names and learn about them. Success comes from relationships and not transactions.
- Don't be afraid to be different.
