Feminine, Flirty, Versatile, Sustainable - Ooshie Resortwear

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissia Hill, Founder and CEO of Ooshie Resortwear LLC., located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Ooshie is a sustainable women's resort wear line that is redefining caftans and creating timeless silhouettes that inspire through vibrant and hand-crafted prints.

Tell us about yourself

I was a pretty shy child growing up and learned at a young age that clothes really influenced how you felt and carried yourself. I realized that fashion was different from style. Fashion is a trend that people follow, whereas style is wearing what feels good to you with confidence and joy. When I became a young adult, I had grown into my confidence, and after the birth of my son, I wanted to share with women my story and fashion and self-discovery.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say starting this journey as an entrepreneur, not giving up, and pushing through no matter what is in itself a big accomplishment. I have a company that I started from scratch in New York City as a single mother with no investors, only from a desire to have more, be more, and share my vision with the world. I am proud of myself, it's a huge accomplishment, and I am just getting started! There are a few other big accomplishments, but I've signed an NDA, so I can't speak about them :)

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The climb can be very lonely but powerful if you use that time effectively. It's hard to push yourself outside of your comfort zone as an entrepreneur.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You must believe in yourself and your vision. If you don't have faith in your own ability, no one else will be convinced.
  2. Whatever you do, never give up and keep taking steps forward towards your dreams. The tiny steps count too.
  3. When things get tough - don't forget to DANCE!
