Tell us about yourself
In 2014, I started Gratiam Consulting, a boutique accounting practice for passionate entrepreneurs. I set out to create an experience that I would want, nurturing, proactive, and educational. I wanted to be a part of my client's life, not a necessary evil which is how most people view their accountant. During the pandemic, one of the staff at my blow dry bar asked me for advice on her 1099 from creating content. I told her she should find someone who specialized in Content Creation - she laughed and said if I could find someone, she would go there. After losing myself down a Google rabbit hole, I realized that place did not exist, so I decided I would create it myself. With that, OnlyTax was born.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have been in business for almost ten years and have developed absolutely incredible relationships with my clients. They add so much joy to my life and have opened my eyes to experiences I would have never known if I had stayed in a traditional accounting firm.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
When I decided to create a firm that was different than the norm, I had a lot of people who vocally doubted me. I had to really dig deep and believe that I was creating something magical, which was not always easy. Almost ten years later, I still have people who doubt me, but I am even more convinced that this was absolutely the path I needed to take.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know that business ownership is the highest highs and the lowest lows.
- Identify what you are amazing at and what is not your zone of genius. Once you can afford it, outsource everything outside your skill set.
- Know that not everyone is a great client; trust your instincts.
