Lovingly Made and Impeccably Sourced - OneSun Farms

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Meyer, Founder and CEO of OneSun Farms, located in Malibu, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Founder of OneSun Farms Granola. We make a line of “small batch” granola and snack products that are 100 percent certified organic, super healthy, and delicious.

Tell us about yourself

I started this business because I care about health and want to build a bridge to better food. Our goal at OneSun Farms is to be successful in the healthy food arena in order to expand the market and availability of consciously grown food. As a farmer, I appreciate the amount of hard work and commitment it takes to grow food that is sustainable and nourishing. I started this business because I care about health and I care about the environment. Those two things are inextricably linked.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner is that I have not allowed myself to get discouraged or defeated by the process, which can be overwhelming for a start-up. I realize how difficult it is to compete with large, established food companies that may not have the same standards or even value truly healthy food as we do at OneSun farms. But seeing how incredible our very small but tight and dedicated team makes it happen every day brings me great joy and satisfaction. Seeing that teamwork and effort is inspiring.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is knowing when to push the gas pedal or pump the brakes. I try very hard to find the longest lever in order to make the most impact with the least amount of resources and effort. Being effective as well as efficient is the greatest challenge. I am really trying to find through analytics (without compromising my intuition) how to hone the 20 % of output that creates the 80% of return.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips for someone starting a business would be to:

  1. Start with a great product and a mission or true meaning behind that product.
  2. Be willing to work hard for that product you believe in and acknowledge and build relationships with all the people that help you make it happen.
  3. Maintain a positive attitude and have faith that what you are doing will work out as long as your aim is true. I know my ultimate mission is to positively impact the way we grow and process food in this country. If I am to accomplish that goal, then our company needs to be financially sound. Therefore my investment of capital has to be shrewd. My team has to be invested in our shared outcome that if we can make a delicious and nutritious product that is good for the consumer and for the environment in a fiscally responsible manner, then we will be a contender in this extremely competitive space. And…. with any luck at all, along with true grit and commitment, we will get noticed by the “Big Guys,” and that is when systems change takes place.
