Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Larina Holland, Founder of One Little Bunch, located in Portland, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
One Little Bunch is an online flower delivery service for the Portland, OR, metro area. We make up little bunches of flowers for delivery every Wednesday and Friday for $28 (and that includes delivery). We believe the gesture of sending flowers should be affordable and simple. Our ordering process is easy and fast, and our flowers are always fresh and long-lasting.
Tell us about yourself
I moved to Portland, OR from Sydney, Australia at the end of 2016. I wanted to start my own business, and I noticed a lack of affordable options for flower delivery here in Portland.
I created the flower cone carrier that our bunches are delivered in, specifically so they can hang on people's front doors, May Day style. I completed a Floral Design and Floral Entrepreneurial Course at the Floral Design Institute and jumped straight in!
I'm into my fifth year now, and I've had my fair share of highs and lows. I really believe in my business concept, and it's what keeps me motivated each day. Most of my customers are regular customers and really love receiving their flowers. It really is enjoyable making up the bunches and delivering them to smiling faces.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having lasted the first five years (almost, April 2nd is our birthday!), I'd say that is an accomplishment. The pandemic actually boosted business, as people would send "flower hugs" to loved ones. I created and maintained the website and a loyalty program and am about to introduce a subscription option. I've had to teach myself how to use Shopify and make it work for my business model.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
There are many challenges, and some days I do want to give it all up and just get a desk job! Staying motivated and disciplined is the hardest part for me. In my previous jobs, I was a personal assistant, so I was used to reporting to someone. Now I have to be my own boss, it's an adjustment. Sometimes it gets lonely, and I really enjoy my trips to the flower market and delivering the flowers to my customers.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You need persistence, believe in your business, and never give up. Take each hurdle you come across (and you will come across many) as another piece to the puzzle you are creating. It will all come together over time. Good luck!
