Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Miles, CEO of OmniRocket, located in Redmond, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We help e-commerce sellers scale up on Amazon and Shopify.

Tell us about yourself

After a 20-year career in non-profit management, my wife and I started selling on eBay in 2007. By 2009 we had launched our own online site, and in 2013, we migrated to Shopify and found scale. When Shopify featured us as a case study in 2015, it launched a consultancy where I began working with sellers helping them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We use our funds from Pixie Faire (our original e-commerce operation) and OmniRocket (our consultancy) to fund our passion project - a charity that is scaling up quickly in Zambia. We employ 100 people there and serve over 22,000 girls through our signature program, The Sew Powerful Purse, and another 5,000 people through our daily feeding school initiative.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Responsibility for Profit & Loss is a heavy weight to carry. But over time, you grow addicted to it, and it becomes a fun aspect of the work. Can you make it rain? Can you cover payroll? Can you identify market opportunities and develop the skills that pay the bills? These are hard things but fun things.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Obsess over the industry, niche, customer need, and eventual product offer you invest your time and money into. Demand it be a good opportunity before you proceed.
  2. Jump in and begin learning. Yes, this is in conflict with point #1. That's the tension. Find a great opportunity, but don't wait too long when you find it. Don't get paralyzed. Move and learn.
  3. When you find your people - you'll find your passion and product. Look for the community that you're passionate about serving - and invest in them - learn with them and from them - and serve them really well.
