Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Oksana Pali, an award-winning photographer based in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a personal branding and product photographer and coach. My customers are female entrepreneurs starting a new business or expanding their current business.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a portrait photographer since 2008. While doing all the different portrait genres, from family to glamour, I was always drawn to personal branding the most. Working with women building their brands is exciting and inspiring. I stop doing other photography styles to hone on one personal branding. Watching my clients grow successful brands with the help of my images is a fantastic feeling!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being featured in Forbes magazine and building a fantastic portfolio of clients I am proud to work with.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing all the different business hats and figuring out what to outsource and what to do myself. For me, the most challenging part was to let go of the control of hiring people to help me with specific tasks such as photo editing or scheduling appointments.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on one thing at a time. It is very tempting to offer multiple services or products from the beginning, but that may make you feel overwhelmed. Pick one thing, perfect it and add on later.
  2. Don't compare yourself to others too much. It's great to be inspired, but watching others too much can make you feel less than others and discourage you. Stay in your lane, and you will get there on your own time.
  3. Be consistent! As cliche as it sounds, that is the most important thing in growing your business. Challenges will arise, and you can't let that get you down or quit. As long as you keep at it long enough, you will see results.
