Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Xiomara Sanchez, CEO of Oh My! Empanada, located in Denver, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Oh My! Empanada produces high-quality gluten-free frozen Colombian empanadas. Our customers are those who seek diverse, ethnic foods and gluten-free, those who prefer easy at home meals, grocery stores, and supermarkets.
Tell us about yourself
In 2020 my community relations job ended with the department of commerce, and finding a job during the pandemic was a challenge, so I just started putting into practice what I learned once from grandma and mom and started selling empanadas among friends. The demographic is changing in the US, and the food options need to evolve as well.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment thus far has been our recent acceptance and completion of two business accelerator programs. We were selected amongst hundreds of other small businesses. These programs have provided mentors and resources to help Oh My! Empanada move forward with scaling our product, outlining our business plans, and preparing pitch opportunities.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a small business owner is not a simple game to play; it’s a long run with unexpected hurdles, but we work hard because we know there is an enormous reward waiting ahead. There are several challenges, but one that has been difficult for us is understanding the challenges of scaling a business because there is a combination of building scalability early versus doing what you have to do to get it all done.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be very specific with your goals and create a business plan.
- Build your network and grow.
- Commitment and follow through.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
