Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and beauty but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with La Shonda Tyree, owner of Nyah Beauty, located in Kearny, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are all about self-care. Caring not only for what you put inside your body but what you put on the outside of your body is equally important. We care about the ingredients used in our products and want them as gentle and nourishing they can be.
Tell us about yourself
I started making soaps as creative therapy while working in banking. What motivates me is the same reason I started. People just like my mom are using skincare that is irritating them daily, and when she told me to make her more soaps because they didn’t irritate her after taking a bath.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Branching out into private label manufacturing. I’ve been able to secure national hotel chains as clients as well as help other indie brands expand without all the costs and time associated with expanding their product line.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Make sure you are charging enough for your products. Current times are dictating the need to increase prices. It often doesn’t feel good to increase pricing, but if you don’t change enough, you won’t be able to maintain it long term.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take business classes for entrepreneurship.
- Connect with like-minded people. They will encourage you when things are not going well.
- Join industry organizations. Great tool for resources.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams. It won’t be easy. But you can do it!
