What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a homeschool consultant and unschool advocate. I work with homeschool families looking for support on paperwork, philosophy, or otherwise finding their feet in alternative education. Most of my clients are based in NYS, though I have worked with families across the US and abroad as well.

Tell us about yourself

I am a strong believer in tailoring education to a learner and not the other way around. Too many of us have been trained to think there is one way to educate a child... but that's not true! Sometimes the regulations around homeschooling can feel overwhelming. My goal has always been to demystify the regulations so that families can feel confident and free to create an educational experience that serves their child(ren) best.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have worked with hundreds of families who now homeschool (and unschool) with confidence! My proudest moments always happen when a client tells me how much more calm and confident they feel after working with me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is a lot of misinformation in my line of work. I have to remind myself that I cannot possibly correct every bit of misinformation, and I have to remind myself not to take on more work than I can reasonably handle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not start a business doing something you don't love. There is way too much work involved in running a business for that.
  2. Know your audience- not everyone wants to feel like you are "selling" something.
  3. Be honest about where you are in your own journey. I admit challenges and faults to my clients regularly!
