Soulful Skincare - NWÄR STUDIOS

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chandra Davis, owner of NWÄR STUDIOS, INC., located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

NWÄR STUDIOS, INC. (pronounced noir) is a boutique beauty studio offering full body waxing, facials, and individual lash extensions to the beauty-conscious of Chicago's northside. Our clients range from women between the ages of 22 - 65. It's a judgment-free space; welcome to all.

Tell us about yourself

As a kid, I'd always dreamed of owning my own business, and I loved making exfoliating products for myself and a few friends. I thought becoming an Esthetician would be a way to start my own business and get paid for what I already loved doing. I launched NWÄR STUDIOS, INC. in 2017, and I've been self-employed ever since. I'm motivated by the freedoms of making my own life and creating genuine connections with people whom I'd never get a chance to meet if I wasn't self-employed. It has been an interesting journey, I've learned so much about myself, but overall, I've enjoyed the experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was opening my second location in July 2020. I've since closed the studio in February 2022, but I'm so proud of what I was able to accomplish, given the circumstances. I learned so much, like how to manage employees in our supply chain and enhance client relations and experiences, all while constantly pivoting throughout the pandemic. I made a few mistakes, but I got valuable lessons I'll need to keep pushing forward with my new skincare project. All in all, I'm just proud of myself!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is juggling multiple tasks and making decisions on your own. There's no supervisor, boss, or HR Department for you to consult before making a decision. You'll have to rely on research, your business operations, and your best judgment to keep things going. It's best to surround yourself with other business owners, advisors, and consultants to help you reach your decision and position yourself for the best possible outcome. You'll wear many hats and become the jack of all trades, but the learning experience NEVER stops. It's, hands down, the most rewarding and humbling experience I've had thus far.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand "why" you're going into business and what you want to do. In other words, if a stranger asked you what you do for a living, your response would be, "what you do and why you do it." Find your sense of self and purpose within your business, and everything else will fall into
    place.
  2. Your actions and decisions should ALWAYS be directed towards your intended goal or outcome. If you have a goal to sell X amount of product or service each month, don't focus your limited energy and resources on blog writing. A better option would be to update your website, invest in an inbound customer service agency or create a referral marketing program. These would be direct investments and decisions related to your intended goal of selling more products or services each month.
  3. Get rid of the naysayers, doubters, and pessimists in your circle. Business is hard enough without bad energies dragging you down.
