No "One Size Fits All" - Nuvitru Wellness
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lahana Vigliano, founder of Nuvitru Wellness, located in Austin, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nuvitru Wellness is a functional medicine nutrition private practice that helps women use food as medicine that struggles with hormone imbalances + digestive issues. Our goal is to help women get to the ROOT of their health issues so that they can feel their best regardless of their age. Women come to us feel unheard and gaslighted by their doctors and have been told genetics and age are to blame. There is POWER in food and lifestyle choices in how we feel, and we're empowering women to take back control of their health!
Tell us about yourself
I originally was going to school pre-med with the goal of becoming a physician assistant. I soon realized that healthcare wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Something didn't feel right that the patient care solutions were figuring out the right medications for them. I knew there was more to chronic disease than simply prescribing a medication. I also knew there was more to the human body than we give it credit for. I took a class in nutrition, started making changes in our own family, and fell in love with the power of food. I also became a young mom at 18 years old, so my perspective shifted to long-term goals of career flexibility with my kids. I also didn't want my kids to become another health statistic. I wanted them to be the healthiest ever and give their bodies what they need to fight chronic disease. It's still not perfect, but from where we started eating a Standard American Diet, it's come a long way!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is not only the growth in creating a team but the growth in our company culture. Both back-end and front-end (our dietitians) employees are incredible. I've worked on creating a culture that feels close to family, but we all have a passion for helping as many people as possible. I care about our patient's health and employees' work happiness and work/life balance. So, every step we've done, even if it's little like offering health insurance, is a huge accomplishment as a business owner.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The ebbs + flows are the hardest. Financially, it feels like there is a stress or worry occurring because our employees rely on us to put food on their table. There is a natural ebb and flow of patients coming into our practice, and we are still learning how to adjust and ride the wave.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't think, just do it. I feel like if I actually sat there and thought of every little thing, I would be overwhelmed and never would've started. I just took it one day at a time.
- Don't give up. You'll hit hard walls 100%. You'll also feel on top of the world at times. Be prepared for both.
- Start a business that is your true passion. When you follow your heart on what you're passionate about, great things happen. You'll enjoy what you do, even in the tough times!
