Photography, Makeup, Graphic Design & More - Nuttshaw Studios
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Renshaw, Founder of Nuttshaw Studios, located in Tubac, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm in a rural area of Southern Arizona. I was working as a photographer & special effects makeup artist in Phoenix when my family members passed away. I inherited a home & a historical, commercial building located on the Mexico border, 20 miles from the house. So now, I'm a landlord & trying to raise money to restore my historic building, which is registered with the National Registry Historic of Places.
Eventually, my husband & I moved from Phoenix to Tubac to deal with it all. Now my business is photography & makeup artistry, which is only occasionally. While slow for the summer, I've added my unintentional home-based cake & baking business that has taken off, on top of being a landlord. It's been hard to focus on one business. In the middle of all the other jobs, I noticed that our area was void of local postcards. With my Photoshop skills I use for photography, I applied it to learning some graphic design & designed a line of local and regional postcards for Southern Arizona. So, to summarize, my business is photography, makeup, graphic design, baking and landlord.
Tell us about yourself
I'm an artist who's trying to figure it all out. There have been many times I thought I had my path set & then it all changes & the path is gone. It changes daily. Wanting a successful product motivates me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Repeat customers.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The "business" part can be intimidating. Taxes, etc. - making sure I'm crossing my t's & dotting my i's.
Keeping on top of social media & getting your name out. Being your own cheerleader while trying not to turn everyone off & now they're sick of me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Organize!
- Be creative.
- Always be willing to listen & learn.
