Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jayne Bullen, Co-Founder of Nutrition Network, located in Cape Town, South Africa.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Global training in nutritional treatment of chronic disease. Our customers tend to be medical professionals and or health coaches, nutritionists, and athletes that have changed their own and or their patients' lives by changing their diets and lifestyles. We offer CME training that supports healthcare workers to de-prescribe chronic conditions and medications and give patients their lives back.

Tell us about yourself

I was motivated to move into the non-profit and social enterprise sector after spending many years in corporate and seeing how it is not the best model for ethics and well-being. The focus is too far on the profitability area, and in that, we lose focus on human wellness, health, and quality of life. I co-founded this business as a way to fund work that really mattered, creating a social enterprise model that would reap the majority of profits back to an NGO that does incredible work and needed funding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having trained over six thousand medical and healthcare professionals in over eighty countries since we began and having managed to fund Eat Better South Africa and its growth, supporting the health of thousands of South Africans in underserved communities.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to ensure growth. There are natural ebbs and flows to life, my own energy, and also the marketplace. A key metric in business is to keep growing and to ensure profitability. Downtime, or slower times, means that jobs and hence people's lives are on the line constantly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it! Take a risk in order to become a job creator rather than a job-taker or consumer! This is how we make things better and create economic growth. It takes a choice to be brave.
  2. Trust that your idea is worth it, do the research to make sure your brand experience matches your vision.
  3. Don't lose sight of your value as a business founder and/or leader: keep doing the work it takes to stay ahead of the game and keep innovating and growing as your business does.
