Fuel Your Body and Health Beyond Sport - Nutrition in Motion
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanna Chodorowska, owner of Nutrition in Motion, located in North Wales, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a holistic sports nutritionist helping athletes fuel their body, health, spirit, sport, and joyful life. We help uncover why your symptoms exist and find real-food options to guide you back to your best health without restrictions.
Tell us about yourself
I am a holistic sports nutritionist, athlete, inflammation expert, and eating disorder recovery coach. I started my business after being diagnosed with adrenal exhaustion in February of 2000. I had to be competitive with my recovery by learning how I got sick, how to eat to fuel my recovery, balance my blood sugar, and manage my stress differently, so it no longer was stress on my body, mind, and soul.
I want to help other athletes find balance in their life and sport so they can find joy in every moment and not use food or sport to run away from their stressors. I walk the walk, not just talk the talk, so I help to inspire others to a more healthy body and life. Each day I have the opportunity to help others heal from the inside out so they can live life with more joy and peace.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having the business for 20 years is probably my biggest accomplishment! Creating my Be Whole program has been the foundation for helping clients find the true answers to their health issues by addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for a new business owner is finding the niche market and the best ways to promote the business. When I started, I had an idea of what I wanted to do, and with a background in sales, I was able to create opportunities to get myself in front of people. I found cycling, running, and triathlon clubs and stores I could partner with and branched out to complementary physicians and chiropractors. This is an ongoing part of the business, and trying to keep the message simple. I have morphed the business several times and always return to what I do best - help athletes with GI issues, inflammation, chronic pain, and health issues by addressing the whole body, mind, and soul.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it. Don't wait until the right time as now is the right time!
- Be sure to have a general plan of who you want to work with and how you want to work with them. Create a program that you can promote to a local facility (in my case, a health club or wellness center) to leverage their contacts and your own.
- Focus on what is going right even when it doesn't feel like it. Connect with as many people as you can through networking, presentations, and socializing opportunities with the people you want to be working with. Be choosy and willing to walk away from the nice people who will never bring you business or work with you. You need to do what works for you and focus your time and energy on those areas that are working!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Be persistent. I learned early on not to take rejection personally when I started in sales. In business, it is the same. Some people you know are not a good fit, but you take them on as clients because you want or need the money. You won't do your best work, nor will you enjoy it as much as you could, and then the client doesn't always get the results you or they want. So be choosy and only pick those who want to do the work you need them to do and are curious about improving their situation. If they say they cannot afford you, then they are not ready to work with you.
