What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a registered dietitian nutritionist with a private practice that offers personalized nutrition counseling and custom meal planning. My customers are those who wish to better their health and nutrition status through nutrition education...most of us know what we should be eating, but we're not sure how to balance the most nutritious foods with "play" foods.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been kind of obsessed with food and nutrition, so starting a business where I get to guide and assist people in achieving health and wellness through food was a no-brainer. My clients motivate me every day...seeing them achieve their wellness goals through simple, sustainable changes in their eating patterns brings me a great deal of fulfillment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been being able to touch my clients' lives through nutrition education. I've seen clients with significant reductions in cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight. Seeing that difference allows me to appreciate the impact I have on my clients' lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is definitely to find the right mix to get the word out about your business...eventually, you figure it out, and people will organically find you!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan, plan, plan. Before you start your business, make sure you know all the components necessary to make your business a fully-fledged business.
  2. Find your method for handling and accepting money. A lot of companies will charge transaction fees, but it definitely makes it worth it to have the ability to accept credit/debit card transactions.
  3. Believe in yourself. You're likely a lot better at what you're doing than you think you are. You're a professional in your field and deserve to be respected as one.
