Alberta’s Go-to Company for Meal Prep - Nutri-Go

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daryl Clark, co-owner of Nutri-Go, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Nutri-Go! A healthy-prep meal provider that services both the Calgary & Edmonton areas. We strive to support those who want the perfect combination of convenience, affordability, flavour, and whole foods in their diet.

Taking out the guesswork when it comes to knowing what you are eating is our forte. All of our freshly prepared meals have full macronutrient information. They are designed by an executive chef with over 20 years in the industry.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Daryl Clark; I am one of the owners at Nutri-Go. I was a serving Constable of the Calgary Police Service for seven years before leaving to pursue the [dream] of owning and operating a private company. I highlight dreams because running your own business sometimes can feel more like a nightmare! BUT over time, you come to realize that each and every one of us has the ultimate choice in what we dedicate our time and energy towards, and for me, the road with bumps is the road I want to be on.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The majority of our population has, at one point or another, had a great idea or wanted to try their hand at entrepreneurship. I have journals, prototypes, scribbled logos, SWOT analyses, etc., from back when I was in high school. The difference with Nutri-Go is that I started.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Execution is the biggest challenge of being a business owner. No one is standing there to catch you when you make a wrong decision or fail to take action towards solving problems. It's all on you.

The second biggest challenge is that once you start, there are no true days off. Going on a boy's trip or out to the lake with my family hits me differently now as the operations of the business and concerns of our customers travel with me at all times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. At the onset of commencing your new venture - seek absolute truth and honesty from those that you share your plans with. It's common for your inner circle to support your new venture and cover red flags they see up with honey. Be honest with yourself when considering the integrity of your idea, as hope is not a business model that works very well.
  2. Absorb accountability for everything. Naturally, not everything that goes wrong when starting up a new business is your fault, but in this case, you must take responsibility for everything to create a successful and profitable venture.
  3. Enjoy the things that don't go smoothly. There is very little reward for easy.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A lot of the entrepreneur podcasters talk about hustle and grind and ignore the human aspect of running a business. Make sure you take the time to look after yourself and your family, or at the end of the day, all your hard work was for nothing more than a Lambo, poor health, and loneliness.
