Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andy Berger, Co-Founder of NuFit Wellness, located in Sunbury, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At NuFit Wellness, we combine personal training with nutrition to give clients a comprehensive, holistic approach to overall health and wellness. Our Certified Personal Trainer and Registered Dietitian use education and whole lifestyle modification to heal disease and make our clients feel and function better in life. We work individually and in small groups to help motivate and encourage our clients. We also offer LIVE and recorded virtual options for clients who like the convenience of working out from home. Our goal is a whole lifestyle transformation, including diet, exercise, active lifestyle, flexibility and mobility, stress, and sleep. If any one of these components is neglected or out of balance, it can wreck the whole body. We see a lot of results through our behavior modification techniques.

Tell us about yourself

I started personal training 20 years ago as a college kid because of my passion for helping people. I managed a few big gym personal training departments and then started a personal training business with a business partner. We owned that facility for 10 years. Then my wife, who is a Registered Dietitian, and I decided to start our own business, NuFit Wellness. My wife and I are still driven daily by our passion for making a dent in the health of this world. With diet trends continuing to become unhealthier and the increased prevalence of fad diets, our goal is to set straight our sphere of influence with simple, research-backed information for our clients that they can use daily. We help people get back to the basics! The world has become busier with more distractions from work, kids' sports, and various activities. We try to make both fitness and nutrition as convenient and simplified as possible so people can succeed in the midst of their busy schedules.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have always been a driven individual. At age 21, I was managing personal training departments, and at age 23, I owned a fitness studio. I have seen a lot of business and financial growth through the years, but I would say the biggest accomplishments come from my client's results. The business will come if the product is a good one. My wife and I put a lot of energy into furthering our programs and education and finding ways to get our clients more results. And in our business, RESULTS brings business. Saving lives through clients losing 100+lbs, reducing and eliminating disease, and being able to live fuller lives is what we feel is a true accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

To be able to do what we love, personal training and nutrition counseling, we have to run a successful business as well. That means all the "other stuff" like accounting, website management, scheduling, social media, etc. This all takes time. The busier we get with clients, the more time we have to spend on the business as well. Trying to balance this with our personal lives can be difficult. We have two young children, a dog, and a mini farm, including a 6000 sqft garden and chickens. Often in business, there is no separation of work time and home life, and both bleed into each other. It is an ongoing effort to keep the two in their place!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be driven by your passion, not money. The money won't always be there, and in rough times, you need passion to get through.
  2. Set firm boundaries on work and family/social life. It's easy for these waters to get muddied.
  3. Seek counsel and mentorship from other business professionals and also the people you are trying to serve. It's easy to do your own market research by just talking with people and getting their honest opinions!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business is extremely rewarding, but it's not for everyone. Yes, you get to make your own schedule, take vacations when you want, call the shots on how business is done, etc. But in today's world, business never sleeps. You're always on call to make decisions and often stress-inducing decisions. Make sure this is what you really want, and if it is, go for it, and you will be rewarded greatly!

Dream big but grow at a pace you can keep up. It's easy to get yourself in too deep, and since the responsibility falls on you at the end of the day, many business owners can break. Persevere past the 5-year mark. It gets better and easier. Most businesses fail in the first couple of years.
