Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leslie Tillis, founder of nu los angeles, located in Marina Del Rey, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a handmade, hand-poured, non-toxic candle company in Marina Del Rey, CA. Our customers are those who want a natural product with a minimalistic and chic aesthetic!
Tell us about yourself
Nu Los Angeles came about after an inspiring candle-making class I took with my best friend, who was visiting me at the time. Something that began as a fun activity turned into this small business that we cherish. We hope to provide candle lovers across the U.S. with a nu, non-toxic and beautiful alternative to the candles they’ve burned in the past. Our goal is to impact our community in a positive way, ultimately partnering with charitable organizations (namely, those that focus on higher education) to contribute to constructive growth within younger generations.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Finding my passion and doing what I love!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Starting a business can be difficult. I’ve found that you cannot only pay attention to the part of the business that inspired you to create it in the first place- all areas of a growing business need attention. Determining my weaknesses and asking experts in those areas for help has been vital in conquering parts of the business that I find challenging.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Talk to others you may know that has started a business of their own, and ask them tons of questions! Take notes!
- You do not have to reinvent the wheel to start a business. You may be launching a product that already exists in a saturated market, but if you’re passionate about it, you can still do very well.
- Take small steps and check off things on your list- looking at the finish line can be daunting; focus on what you’d like to complete each day instead.
