Act Like a Lady, Lash Like a Boss - Nova Kane Beauty
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krystal Abraham, CEO of Nova Kane Beauty, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nova Kane Beauty is a beauty business that focuses on eyelash extensions. My customers are anyone looking for that extra pep in their step. Isn't there a saying that says, "The eyes are the windows to one's soul"? Well, let's add some drama to those said windows!
Tell us about yourself
My name is Krystal & I'm the CEO of Novakane Beauty. This business was founded in October 2018, and I must say it has been one of my most rewarding experiences to date. I am a 5X-certified lash artist, and I LOVE everything that has to do with beauty. I truly enjoy giving women that extra boost of confidence after they visit the lash studio. In addition to this, I am also a beauty blogger. I started my Youtube channel in 2020; however, the lash business has taken off so much in the last 18 months that I have slowed down on my beauty blogging, but I'm happy because I truly do enjoy the lash business much more.
My main reason for getting into the lash extension business was just my admiration for the art itself when I used to get my lashes done. I always remember feeling like "That Girl" after getting my lashes done and wanting to be able to do that for other people.
Every day I am motivated by my clients; I truly look at them like all my besties. We share so much time together and talk to each other about everything, like relationships, life, business, celebrity gossip, and so much more. I know more about most of my clients than I do some of my family, lol.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was purchasing my first home, which I was able to do because of the success of my business. When I started, I wouldn't have imagined being able to do this, especially in Ontario, which is so expensive as it is, but my clients gave me this opportunity and pushed me every day to want more and more. I want to be my best and do my best because of how they inspire me and vice versa.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is finding balance. If I let myself work none stop, it's literally a one-way train to burnout. My biggest obstacle is myself and learning to observe the boundaries I set for myself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just Start!! I stopped myself from doing so many things out of the fear of failing, but I have failed and bounced back, so all of those failures are now lessons that have made me more resilient as a business owner to change, good and bad.
- Block out the noise! The majority of people try to project fear that they have onto you, so you don't do something. It's okay to not want to be what I saw as "regular"; it's okay to want more for yourself. I don't want a regular life; I want to do something exceptional. I want to build something from the ground up, and not everyone will understand that, and that's okay but ignore them! Prove them wrong!
- Don't give up! You will suck in the beginning when you first do something, and that's okay; just keep going.
