Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nikola Muckajev, Owner of Noumena, located in West Jordan, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Noumena, a one-person media production, and distribution studio. My customers are people from all over the globe that enjoy music, podcasts, video games, books/audiobooks, and visual art.

Tell us about yourself

The most significant catalyst was my disappointment in watching how former employers and educators conducted themselves and ran their businesses. This was the single most influential factor prompting me to strike out independently.

That same catalyst motivates me to get up and work on Noumena daily. Having the creative freedom and power to do what I want, how I want, and when I want is a very addictive motivating factor.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The fact that I did it and am still doing it. It's far from the flashiest accomplishment, but one that keeps coming back around. I've met countless others who would spend disproportionate amounts of time talking about how they wanted to do this or that, only to never materialize into anything more than a pipe dream.

This same factor is why I will always respect those who strike out on their own and create something for themselves. Talk is cheap.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The understanding that no one is going to do it for you. Knowing and truly accepting that while every one of your wins is solely yours, so are your failures. There is no one else to pass the buck on to. It all starts and ends with you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it. You don't need to know everything or where you'll be taking things four to five years from now. Having a plan is nice, but don't give in to delusion. Life will find a way to throw you off course. Roll with it, and remember why you started your business in the first place.
  2. Do it every single day. Make it a habit. Don't ruin yourself through work, but make it a priority. Make yourself a priority. If you're constantly blowing off your dreams for the easy route, consider just how much you believe in them.
  3. Rest. You've got your entire life to work and tweak things. Refrain from running yourself ragged, thinking you need to hit arbitrary milestones set forth by some random pundit on Twitter. You don't. Those opinions don't matter; they only target those nervous and seeking a panacea. Reconnect with yourself, and you will find yourself on the right path. Your inner voice is your most significant source of business advice. Trust your gut.
