Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alessandra Wall, Founder of Noteworthy, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a high-end executive coaching and consulting practice that is focused on elevating executive and senior leading women in STEM and finance industries. We consult with companies that genuinely want to elevate and promote women leaders in these spaces. To them, we are retention experts.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career as a psychologist. Loved it, then didn't. Build my first coaching business - a life coaching practice - and hated it. Lucky me, it was an abysmal failure, so I easily walked away from it in later 2017. In 2018 I came back with a clear vision of who I wanted to serve, how I could best support them, and the impact I wanted to create.

I'm motivated by the stories of burnout and struggle I hear from women all around. I see incredibly powerful professionals and change-makers who are killing themselves for a fraction of the recognition or compensation they deserve.

I'm motivated by the fact that the world is a mess, and I know that new leadership could improve things a lot. I believe these women are the answer to a corporate (political) system that leaves people feeling used, undervalued, forgotten, and disillusioned.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Reinventing myself and going from failed businesswoman to a company that we are, realistically, in the process of scaling to a 7 figure business. I credit that shift to a lot of personal mindset work, learning how to build social capital, and advocating for my impact - all things I teach the women I work with.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time and energy management. If you love what you do, like me, it can be all-consuming. That's both necessary for success and NOT healthy. Learning how to strike that balance between wildly successful and deeply fulfilling is a constant process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start by deciding who you want to work with/for before you decide what you'll do or what business model you'll use.
  2. No one knows what you do or what you bring to the table; it's your job to clearly and powerfully articulate your value and why others should give a damn about it.
  3. Social capital makes the world go round. Go build MEANINGFUL relationships. Don't think transactionally, but do realize that it's a give and take, so be clear about what you can do for others and what they can do to support your growth, then ASK FOR THAT SUPPORT!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

  • Success doesn't have to come at the cost of burnout.
  • It's okay, even essential, for women to own their ambitions.
  • Chances are you're biased, and that bias is affecting someone in your life - check yourself, be honest, be better, adjust, adapt and change.
