Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Lau, Owner of NOT A DELI, located in Toronto, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

NOT A DELI offers a delightful assortment of Kpop photocard collecting supplies, displays & accessories. Whether you're a new collector or a long-time fan, we've got the products to suit your tastebuds!

Tell us about yourself

I first started a business as a response to the lack of options available to us K-pop fans when it comes to photocard collecting. While there is an abundance of supplies for trading card games and sports card collectors, there were very few products marketed for K-pop collectors. As a collector myself, I wanted to bring cute but protective supplies to the growing market and make it more accessible for overseas fans. I'm constantly motivated by the creativity of the K-pop community, which inspires me to offer better products for our shop.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I don't have a crazy amount of sales, nor do I have a lot of followers, but as a small business, I think even the smallest things can be big accomplishments. I'm very grateful whenever a customer shares their support. A Kpop fans collection is so special to them, so it means a lot that my products can be part of it!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is all the time it takes out of your day. As the only employee in the business, I have to manage everything, from customer service to creating the website to product photography, etc., and almost all my free time is dedicated to my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's never too late. The earlier you start, the faster you can build your business.
  2. You'll never be fully 'ready.' You learn the most as you run your business.
  3. Don't bother with ads. At least until you're an established brand. Word of mouth and your customers who share your brand on social media will always be the strongest and cheapest form of marketing.
