Your Kind of Cheesecake - Northgate Taste
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anthony Rupert, founder of Northgate Taste, located in Milwaukee, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We make cheesecakes to order, and we also offer low sugar, sugar-free, raw sugar, vegan, and gluten-free varieties. We do offer single-layer cheesecakes, but our most popular varieties are “special” cheesecakes, which are four-layer desserts consisting of alternating layers of cheesecake and cake, crisp or cobbler, all enrobed in a cream cheese icing.
Tell us about yourself
I began making cheesecakes in 2009 just as a way to earn extra money now; it has switched from a hobby to a passion. What motivates me to make the cheesecakes every day is the satisfaction I get from making something from scratch and then the reaction from the customers who enjoy my product.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is tied between having write-ups in local newspapers and being “liked” by Food Network personalities.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is at the very beginning of the process; you have to spend money in order to MAKE money. What I mean is, you have to buy all your products first before you make a single sale.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure you have a great product, not just a good product, but a GREAT product.
- Make sure you accurately calculate how much it costs you to make your products, then price your products at a point that would be enough for you to make a decent profit. Breaking even is not nearly enough.
- Allow yourself to be able to accept criticism. No one likes to be criticized for any reason, but tips are what help improve us and our respective products.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Thank you for the opportunity to showcase me and my products. I hope to hear from you again in the near future.
