Mojo Owl - Nors Beatriz
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nors Beatriz, Founder of Mojo Owl, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is named Mojo Owl for a reason. I'm a reiki master, and I like to make fun, playful gemstone talismans. Also, as a Latina, I was basically born wearing earrings, so I call myself an "earring addict," and I enjoy making unique earrings. I like to use quality materials like 14KGF and Sterling Silver because they last and are hypoallergenic. My designs are unique and about highlighting the gemstones.
Tell us about yourself
I have been a healer in Chicago for over 30 yrs. I had a studio called Now Studio in Bucktown and then moved to Logan Square, where I did Reflexology and Craniosacral Therapy. I've always made jewelry for my clients using gemstones. For the last five years, I have been focusing more on jewelry, and Mojo Owl is an extension of my old healing work. I love to help people get on the right track, and creating small beautiful objects is a fun way to bring joy into someone's life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my biggest accomplishment is, honestly, having been able to sustain a living just being unique and different. I did attend DePaul University, and I graduated with a Journalism and communications Degree, which I used in Jobs after college, but I always found it strange to work in an office. I don't think I was cut for that and the universe pretty much told me that when I was run over by a drunk driver. I am so lucky to have cobbled a life being my own boss and creating beautiful gemstone jewelry.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Sometimes, it's hard to be motivated. You can't always be "on," and as an artist, you do have your "down" days, but those are the days you try to be nice to yourself and take it easy. Then, you have to be able to shake it off and get back to work and start moving after a day or so. It takes movement to create movement. It's all about creating positive momentum.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Use what you know. Start a business with the talents you already have. Some people are born cooks; others are good with woodworking or crafts. I've always been good with people and making things, and other than getting some certifications, I used the experience that I learned from working in jobs that I did after college to build my business, and I learned from paying attention to what successful people did. Having role models in fields that interest you is important. I studied and worked with people who were in healing fields. I think it's important to read and or listen to podcasts about what other people are doing to glean information that could inspire you. Learn patience. Too many times, people get frustrated and lose focus because they think success should be instantaneous, but success is a series of steps that takes time and effort. In the beginning, there are way more bad days, but with effort and patience, those days get smaller and are replaced with busy and fulfilling days, the days that make you smile that "this is why I'm doing this."
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Just be open and allow yourself to pivot and change direction if things are going exactly as planned. You never know where it might lead, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
