Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexandre Winter, Co-Founder, and CEO of Norbert Health Inc., located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We have built the first contactless and automated vitals signs scanner that can automate the repetitive work of a nurse taking your blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and spo2. Our device does that without contact, without requiring any effort from the patient, in 20 seconds. It helps alleviate the alarming issue of lack of resources in healthcare - we will miss roughly 23m nurses in 2050 - both because the population of the world is aging and we need more nurses, but also because health care is hard. Our device is fully automated and is usable autonomously inside a home, keeping an eye on the health of patients who need monitoring without requiring regular visits to the doctor's office.

Tell us about yourself

My mother passed away of an undetectable disease, a brain aneurysm, during her sleep. This could have been detected with constant vital signs monitoring. She would never wear an apple watch or another type of wearable for monitoring. This was the original trigger for me to build an ambient health sensor. Then I discovered what the technology can do today by combining radar sensing, visual sensing, and long-wave infrared sensing - and that got my inner geek even more excited. For the record, I spend about 60% of my time writing AI code.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a team of outstanding talent and seeing how these great people create an amazing culture and quadratically develop our brain power.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Facing the ups and downs of startup life - one day, you feel like it is all going to crash, and the next day you are on top of the world. But this is also what makes it exciting!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire the smartest people you can find. Even if it means hiring very slow.
  2. Never give up.
  3. Trust your instincts and go FAST.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
