What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nonprofit Nav provides consulting, planning, and referral services for nonprofits. We specialize in new executive director coaching, strategic planning, and growth/campaign planning.

Tell us about yourself

I started Nonprofit Nav in order to have the flexibility to work on a wide variety of causes and projects. The work I do is a continuation of the career I've built over twenty years working for and growing nonprofit organizations. The areas I specialize in are the ones where I've had the most success and seen the greatest need. I'm motivated each day by the ability to use my time, energy, and skills to further good work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is taking the achievements I've had with other leading nonprofits and converting them into practices, approaches, and methods by which other nonprofits can achieve similar success.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you love what you do, stopping to sleep, eat, and do non-work things is sometimes a hard balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Everyone starts scared. If they say they aren't, they're lying. Keep your focus and determination up by remembering that you're not alone.
2. Make a list of what you can do each day to move your business forward. Every day there are things you can do. Listing them and crossing them off builds momentum.
3. Network! Everywhere you go, be prepared to talk about what you do and your value proposition.
