For All Your Music Needs - Nomadic Studios

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Mitchell, Founder of Nomadic Studios, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a composer for film and TV, the owner of Nomadic Studios near Denver. Nomadic Studios is a production studio focused on scoring, but also offers: commercial themes, artist production, mixing, mastering, live instrument tracking, and sound design. My clients are directors, producers, production music libraries, businesses looking to promote themselves, artists, and other local studios.

Tell us about yourself

Music has been my life since a very young age, beginning my musical journey at age five with singing and adding multiple instruments over the years. My current instrument collection is up to 34 instruments. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I love acquiring and learning new sounds to add to my music. As my number one passion, I've always felt the power of music and the joy it can bring to others. My whole life, I have dreamt of building a career in music, though in the earlier years, that took another form. I wanted to be an artist, put out albums, tour, etc.

In 2012, I had the opportunity to score my first film and absolutely fell in love with the process. At that moment, my career goals shifted, and I have been dedicated to growing that ever since. Bringing that level of emotion to the table to complement the visual was such an empowering experience.

Music is a universal language, transcending language barriers and invoking deep feelings where words fall short. For example, you can listen to a song in a foreign language, and you still feel what the song means you to feel. Using my passion for changing lives gets me going every day and keeps me going. I feel very lucky to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Oh, that's tough to pick. I feel like every day is a win being able to do what I love. If I had to narrow it down: I'm pretty proud of some of the shows in particular that my music has been on, as well as when Senator Durbin used my music to convey his campaign message to millions of people. I'm not very political, but trusting my music to deliver his message was a proud moment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would say one of the most difficult things about my career came with the moment of realization that I need to dedicate time to many things other than simply composing and producing music. These days, to be successful, you need to network, devote time to a social media presence, seek out new clients, and promote your brand across various platforms. I've always known this was a significant piece but actually blocking off time for it was difficult to figure out at first. It took a good amount of thought, brainstorming, and prioritizing. As a sole proprietor, this is all up to me. I've figured out a pretty good balance of these now.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Probably the most important: be passionate about and truly believe in what you do, and let that passion show and guide you. People are drawn to genuine enthusiasm.
  2. Practice your craft regularly; no matter how great you are at what you do, there is always room to improve. Being open to constructive criticism is really important to get a larger view of the whole picture. It can sting at first, but some of the most intense constructive criticism has helped me grow the most.
  3. If you really believe in what you are doing, never give up. Building our dreams always take longer than what we have dreamt of, which is very humbling at times. If I had listened to the people trying to tear me down, I wouldn't be running my studio doing my favorite thing to do for a living.
