Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in finance but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shonnita Leslie, Founder of Noir In Color, LLC, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Noir In Color, LLC. A Personal Finance content platform for post-graduate millennials who support themselves off of multiple streams of income and have at least $30k in student loan debt, typically someone that graduated during the Great Recession of 2009.

Tell us about yourself

I am a graduate of the Great Recession, who graduated with $100k in student loan debt, with a Master's in School Counseling. Out of frustration with my own financial situation and seeing my story replay itself with the students I was assigned to work with as a School Counselor, I decided to document my journey toward paying down my student loan debt by creating a blog and educational YouTube channel to help those who struggled with the burden of paying down their student loan debt with a low income. My content is designed to reach out and touch the lives of those who might be struggling with post-graduate debt. The articles posted on my blog are meant to help alleviate some stress by providing information on how to manage student loan repayment plans and give tips about making money as a side hustle while still living a practical real life (that is, by not having to live off of beans and rice indefinitely).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is pushing myself outside of my comfort zone in hopes that it will give readers and viewers something new they hadn't thought about before--a way forward after graduation and financial hardship.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is time management. Learning when to invest back into your business by the act of delegation and learning WHAT to delegate has been my hardest lesson yet.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I'd give anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today would be:

  1. Find your Joy - you can't grow what doesn't feed your passion.
  2. Establish Boundaries - with yourself, your time, and others.
  3. Delegate - Invest in your resources as soon as you can to grow your business.
