Through results-focused solutions, we enable organizations to elevate their online presence and engage and delight their customers and future customers online. Tell us about yourself
I was an artist from a young age, and once I discovered graphic design as a profession, I knew it would be the perfect career for me. I majored in Visual Communications with a minor in business and started doing freelance work shortly after graduating. I was fortunate to slowly grow my freelance business while working for five years on an in-house marketing team, then three years as a UI/UX Designer at an advertising agency. Once my freelance income was enough on its own, I quit my full-time job and officially launched Noble Intent Studio in 2016.
The flexibility of "being my own boss" is what motivates me each day. Having worked in-house and at an agency, I know that having the control that comes with my own business is the best fit for my work style. I love solving challenges and creating solutions for my clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was growing our revenue enough to bring my husband on board full-time at the end of 2019. I'm proud to run a business that financially supports our family in San Diego!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Every penny you bring in is through you going out and earning it. Essentially, if you have an unproductive day, month, or year, you're probably not getting paid if you're running your own business. In traditional jobs, you are paid to show up to work for roughly 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year. It doesn't matter as much how productive you are in the short term as long as you show up. As a business owner, you might have to work significantly more or much harder, especially at first. On the flip side, you may end up working significantly less as you gain efficiency and increase profitability!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Brush up on your writing skills. Whether it's proposals, case studies, marketing materials, or just plain emails, knowing how to write well is key to successful communications with clients. Communication is everything!
- Get involved in a community of like-minded people. Join a group that is industry or location-specific or that you identify with in some other way.
- Establishing yourself and getting clients is a slow process. Don't expect overnight results, and plan accordingly. It may make sense to keep a part- or full-time job when you're first starting out.
