Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordan Brown, Owner of No Worries Wellness LLC., located in Wauwatosa, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a mental health counseling practice. My clients are young adult women who are looking for help with anxiety and self-worth.

Tell us about yourself

One of my clients, who I started working with before I began my own practice, reminds me that I used to say that I would never go out on my own. We have a good laugh about that. Before 2019, I didn't think that I would want to start my own business. After working as an independent contractor for almost one year and getting a better idea of what went into the business end, I thought, "I can do this." So, I started to get the process going in the Fall of 2019 and started my practice in January 2020. I've learned that I actually love the business side. I love marketing and maintaining my website, and I don't even mind the billing aspects. Because I enjoy it, that keeps me motivated to continue learning and improving - not only for myself and my business but for my clients, too.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is how much I've grown personally. You might expect a lot of professional growth with starting a business, which I've seen as well - but I've also experienced a lot of growth in my confidence and boundary-setting abilities, which have spread to other areas of my life, too.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is boundaries. Because I started my business right before the pandemic started in 2020, I had to learn how to set boundaries so that I wasn't working outside my scheduled hours. As I've taken on more responsibilities outside of client work, I've had to set boundaries with how many clients I can see each week. As I've grown and started a group practice, I've been offered many great opportunities, and there have been some that I have had to turn down because it would mean taking on too much. I think many business owners are ambitious people who want to do it all, and we would if we could, but that means that we need to be mindful of our boundaries so that we have enough time and energy left to take care of ourselves and life outside of our businesses.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the leap! You may never feel fully "ready," but you don't need to be. You don't have to know it all to be able to step into business ownership. You can continue learning along the way.
  2. You might (and probably will) make mistakes. That's okay. Learn to forgive yourself and learn from them, so you can continue to move forward and grow personally and professionally.
  3. Find support. Whether through Facebook groups, family members, or a professionals group, find people who support your journey and or have experience in business who can provide guidance and mentorship.
