Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie McGuire, founder of NMcguire Studio, located in Saint Paul, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create multi-sensory wall art that engages your curiosity of what lies beyond what you see is personal to you. They are a perfect mixture of Van Gogh meets Ansel Adams and Bob Ross. My technique is a labor-intensive process. My technique starts out with a journey into nature, capturing the images that I will make into a photozaic.

Tell us about yourself

I love creating art as it helps me connect with collectors. The multi-sensory gives the viewer the ability to view the art and feel it. My motivation is simple really, it is my collectors’ facial expressions when viewing my art that never gets old, and I’m humbled by this experience too. It helps drive me to do more creative ideas like adding a 3D effect to my photoziacs.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is getting my artwork into National and international exhibitions and having collectors worldwide.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me was finding my collectors having to take risks that sometimes pays out, and other times it’s a lesson learned.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Depending on your business- as an artist wanting to sell your art, I suggest going to local art shows. Look at coffee shops, join local art communities, and network.
  2. Listen to what your potential clients are saying about your work. Negative comments can be a learning message, so take them lightly.
  3. Price your art so you can make a living, DO NOT UNDERSELL YOUR ABILITY AS AN ARTIST. Don’t overprice your art. Do the research on other artists at your medium and price accordingly.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don’t give up; it takes time to build your empire.
