Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nidhin & Cassandra Koz, Founders of Nkoz Photography, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are wedding photographers serving the fun and life-loving couples of Calgary, Alberta.
Tell us about yourself
We are a husband and wife duo who shoot all our weddings together. I (Nidhin) started out on my photography journey in landscape photography while traveling. I realized that I had a passion for photography and started shooting events for friends, and I became a second shooter for weddings in 2019. Cassandra began to pick up photography in 2020 and joined me for engagement shoots in 2021 and weddings in 2022. We love meeting new people, learning about their lives, finding commonalities, and experiencing new perspectives. In our field of work, meeting with clients and working together to create and capture their dream day fuels our passion.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Tax season! Haha! There's so much paperwork when it comes to running your own business, and it can honestly be so overwhelming. I'm really proud I've been able to push through and be successful with all the paperwork so far.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Tax season? Haha. But also marketing, SEO, and social media management.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Invest time and money into your business.
- Research, research, research! This includes your skill and innovative ways to showcase the best of what you have to offer and your target client population.
- Build B2B (business to business) relationships: network! Get yourself out there, and connect with other vendors in your niche. Creating these relationships can be invaluable. Stop seeing other businesses as competitors and rather as friends and professional resources. Every business has a unique target audience in terms of its style, pricing, and availability, so don't feel like you need to compete with other businesses in your niche - support other small business owners!
