Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nirvana Nirvan, Founder of Nirvana Academy of Violin, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nirvana Academy of Violin offers violin classes in the city of Calgary in all 4 quadrants. Our customers are parents of children ages 5-16.
Tell us about yourself
I started to teach violin when I was 17. I was a teaching assistant at the conservatory where I studied. At that age, I realized how much I enjoyed passing on my musical knowledge to students and how much inventing ways to help students learn faster had become one of my biggest passion. Over years of teaching children, I learned how children function as my focus became them and not myself anymore. The more I got involved with the field of pedagogy, the more I wanted to do for the children. After observing how far these children can go and how much they can achieve, my motivation to teach them increased every day. Children's accomplishments, their intelligence, and their way of approaching things and solving things became very fascinating to me, and these are what motivate me to keep on going.
My 4.5-year-old student, who is now 14 and is teaching our beginner and intermediate students, is what motivates me. My 19-year-old student who started to play the violin when she was 14 and passed the audition at the most prestigious Calgary Youth Orchestra at the age of 16 and started to teach our young students also at the age of 16 and now is sending students to the RCM exams is what motivates me. My 8-year-old, who won the gold medal in the national exams, is what motivates me. And many more examples like these are the reasons that I never lose my passion for children and education.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The students that I have trained have got accepted into Calgary Youth Orchestra, they have been hired to perform in important events, they got gold medals from the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music), they became teachers who are now teaching our younger students, and more.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding the right teachers to work with.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do it only if it's your passion.
- Be creative and different.
- Don't be satisfied with small.
