Professional Headshots Made Simple and Fun - Nina Parker
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nina Parker, owner of Nina Parker Studios, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Headshots are my specialty. Individuals NEED polished and current images to present themselves in a wide variety of business and marketing scenarios online, ranging from LinkedIn to company websites to dating apps. My clients are found at all levels of business, from executives to recent graduates. In the studio, I offer individualized headshot sessions to create a variety and customized experiences. On Location, I offer teams a customized and convenient option to level up their headshots without leaving the office.
Tell us about yourself
My path into photography began as a personal hobby when my nephews arrived and grew from there. As I responded to the needs of friends and family and developed my skill set, I did sessions part-time for several years before going full-time in 2010. Seeing how meaningful and empowering it can be for people to see a great photo of themselves is a significant motivator. A business portrait that showcases the subject's personality reflects the messaging they want to convey to potential contacts and is on point with body language, and branding is a highly valuable tool. It can make or break their success in connecting with those they want to reach. Helping people achieve their goals through a fantastic headshot is really satisfying.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Staying in business for over a decade, surviving multiple economic 'incidents,' and successfully shifting from the type of work I did earlier in my business to those that I offer now, which are a better fit for me.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being an employee versus being a business owner is a completely different paradigm. The level of responsibility and ownership that comes with having your own business is significant. Whereas most people leave the office or clock out at the end of the day, mentally, I'm almost always thinking about various aspects of work.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Before starting your own company, especially as a solo entrepreneur or in a creative field, build a solid base of business acumen. Marketing, managerial accounting, bookkeeping, and tax management are by far the more pivotal factors in success than style or creativity.
